Thought Adjuster: “Spiritual progress is a journey that is made through every decision you make in your life, in every moment of your day. It is truly the quest for self-mastery. When self-control and self-mastery are spoken of, one normally thinks of the mastery of physical impulses. This is one aspect of self-mastery, but the concept actually refers more fully to the ever-increasing control of the human will, to the submission of the human will to the emerging spiritual will within every mortal.
Self-mastery is simply the development of the courage, fortitude, and wisdom to always make the best decision in every situation, and that decision represents the most loving path a mortal creature can conceive. Through the practice of attaining self-mastery, you learn to control your body and mind so that they may function at their highest levels, but this discipline also gradually makes you the master of your own destiny, for you will have acquired the power to adjust your decisions and actions so that they bring you ever closer to the eternal goal of perfection.
The attainment of self-mastery is not an easy task. Many times, you will find yourself struggling against habits that have taken a lifetime to establish. Often you will confront attitudes and behaviors that you have learned, or into which you have been indoctrinated by your environment or by those around you. Many times, you will have to take a path that very few have traveled, without the example of others who have gone through the same experience. All of this requires the exercise of courage, fortitude, and faith—qualities that will be of great value to you in your life beyond this world.
But although the exercise of self-control is often difficult, the greatest obstacles will present themselves on those occasions when you fail, when you realize that you have fallen short in your efforts to become better. It is a very human response to feel disappointed, weary, or incapable in the face of failure. Do not allow yourself to be dominated by these moments of failure, and remember that it is in our mistakes that the most important lessons are often hidden. Indeed, the one who has taken the wrong path and become lost many times often knows the way better than the one who has always traveled the right path. In the end, reaching the desired destination is what matters, not how long it takes nor the manner in which you arrive.
Remember each day, when you find yourself in those moments when everything seems more difficult and your lower nature threatens to take control, that these are precisely the moments that have been presented to you as opportunities to become better and to put into practice the ideas and values that have been bestowed upon you from on high—the guiding influence of your Thought Adjuster. And even when you fail and lose your composure in the midst of the storm, do not forget that you have the power to retrace your steps and return to the right path that will lead you toward perfection and eternal life.
As long as there remains in your heart a sincere desire to find the Father and to become more like him, there will never be a moment when you can say that all is lost. There will never be a moment when you have exhausted the cup of the Father's mercy. This cup is always available to sustain the thousand and one failures into which the children of God may fall, whether intentional or accidental, because whoever has placed his trust in the Father and hungers and thirsts for righteousness has, in the eyes of God, already attained perfection in eternity. It is the desire in your heart—the sincere desire—that will save you.”
