Subject: “About Humanness.”

The Scribe: “I wish to speak to you about humanness, especially in relation to the status of enlightenment and its pitfalls. If and when you (George) feel either confident or so inclined to put it to the Progress list, you may do so. However, there is no insistence on My part or that of others (Celestials) to see that it is published in any way and either in full or in part.
“The sudden ‘appearance’ or ‘event’ of Enlightenment, being the gift of one or more aspects of the Morontia Mind, can have widely varied effects on the 7-fold human mind. Why is this so? It is because you are so different, racially and in a hundred other ways, not to mention your enormously varied belief systems.
“In women the phenomenon can be a vase of flowers or a garden shrub, seemingly lighting up. And afterwards there is a ‘matter-of-cause-knowing’ about God and the universe as if this knowing was always already there, when it certainly was not. Rarely, I say rarely, is Enlightenment a cause for the female to go completely ‘round the twist’ as you describe it, but yes, it does so happen. Mostly the female takes Enlightenment well and simply carries on as before, while some become great contributors.
“In males Enlightenment can go either way: They can become great contributors with their new and advanced minds, or totally lose the storyline. Yes, Enlightenment can have great impact on the male mind and until such time as you come to fully understand this totally natural and progressive phenomenon better than you do now, there will arise still more ‘gurus’ and false leaders who will take you by the hand and lead you nowhere fast.
“Awareness of this now more common but exceptional experience is what is needed and the initiated need your standing by them to channel their new gifts into worthwhile projects, not pick up the pieces when it has become too late.”
George: “We are Urantians, we’re unique. I say we’re just awkward and then some.”
The Scribe: “Perhaps. In time a clearer understanding of Enlightenment will prepare you for the hidden dangers so associated with that sudden event and allow you to understand that the most divisive problems to be overcome deal with an awakened fanaticism. Even the well-adjusted can later in life become as zealous as to lead themselves and their followers into despair.
“Also, as you well know, contact with Celestial Teachers can occasionally be tenuous and human ‘group-thought’ can bring visions of exploding nuclear bombs or interplanetary invasions. So, stay happy, healthy and humble in your humanness . . . and always count on Me for the answers you need.

“In the story of the Pharisee and the publican praying in the temple, the one felt rich in spirit—egotistical; the other felt “poor in spirit”—humble. One was self-sufficient; the other was teachable and truth-seeking. The poor in spirit seek for goals of spiritual wealth—for God. And such seekers after truth do not have to wait for rewards in a distant future; they are rewarded now. They find the kingdom of heaven within their own hearts, and they experience such happiness now.” [UB, 140:5.7]
Thought Adjuster: “When Jesus spoke about the poor in spirit, he did not mean the witless but was bringing attention to a desirable attitude conducive to a rich spiritual life. Only the humble at heart are teachable, as they candidly admit to their ignorance and deficiencies and are eager to make up for these lacks.
Condescending individuals are so self-imbued that they leave no room for the Divine to work wonders in their hearts. Their spiritual entitlement and oversized egos jeopardize the maturation of their spiritual self — rightfully identified as the higher self, not the lesser one.
How teachable are you? Your receptivity to higher input cannot but enhance the quality of your human experience. How could the Great IQ, whose you are the brain-child, steer you toward the happy fulfillment of your glorious destiny if you lend a deaf ear to Its best-intended suggestions?”

Subject: “Guideposts of Inner Growth.”

The Beloved: “A pure and trusting heart that comes in joy to the Creator of all is always sure of a loving response. It is the way of gladness that despite outer circumstances, the soul still has a song to sing. As well, the Creator always and likewise, enjoys the elevated state of the soul.
You have begun more clearly to recognize the Spark of God within. You also have begun to realize that the Beloved within is known to each individual soul by Its own name. Although the name does not matter, the reality of Its existence does.
Therefore, the more often a mortal turns inward into the Silence, the more he or she partakes of that immortal Gift from God. In time such a life will exude that indefinable fragrance as it learns to discern the still Voice and to follow Its leadings.
The saturation of divine love of the Creator is always reciprocal to the love of the human creature, although this may not always be perceived as such by others. The self is very ignorant of its growth. He or she can only discern this on looking back over their lives’ paths.
Is he or she happier? Has life contributed to discernable growth like strength of character? Has he become more tolerant and loving towards others? Does she sincerely try to discern the God of all creation in all others and accept each man, woman and child as her kin?
These are some of the guideposts of inner growth and development. Progress is noted by one’s following of the leading of the inner Voice, and not the voices of the world and its temptations, which clamor to enslave the soul in the form of addictions and more.
Persevere in your daily habit of coming to Me to commune in the Silence of your heart, and keep your eyes focused on the Glory of God.”

The Scribe: “The truth as one sees it, my student, is different for every single member in your community and of your diverse races on our planet. Not one person sees truth as does another. And such individual views of truth include firstly the past, secondly the status quo or present, as well as thirdly, the future. In truth, what you and your kin know about truth, as your eminent celestial Teachers will know, is a pale, sun-bleached version of the truth . . . hardly recognizable.
“Your celestial Teachers are the most mature we can find on Manson World Seven — at times further afield — and they hardly ever will quibble amongst themselves about the way a lesson is to be presented. If, however, there is a difference of opinion it inevitably deals with your truth, the known-and-understood records of things past, your reality about your present, or your expectations of the future. This, my human friend, is a very deep subject and we will do no more today than carefully dip our toes into this somewhat muddy pool of past happenings . . . and only for a very short time.
“I will begin by saying that God did not bury bones in the earth for these bones to become a later surprise for archeologists and for other people to either confound them or amuse them. In time, your machines that will look deep into the earth and into the rocks will be infinitely more advanced than the things you now wave about and that go ‘beep-beep-beep’. You need to discover beyond doubt just what it was that happened on your planet and for how long and accept those things before we, your Teachers, are willing to refer to them in greater detail.
“See it this way: We have a difficult-enough task to plant new spiritual concepts in your minds without disrupting your established and simpler beliefs too much. If you can believe that the vast majority of celestial groupings, celestial species, are still unknown to you, then you might realize how little you comprehend of what perhaps dwelt on this earth a hundred million years ago. It is not for me to convince you that in antiquity huge rocks, weighing more than 100 tons, were cut from a rock-face with precision and transported over great distances. It is not for me to assure you that with some matter of regularity many huge skeletons are and were unearthed that measured 15 feet and more.
“In all seriousness, your world-wide spiritual progress is our main concern. Your planet’s past is for you to personally research. I Am the Damascus Scribe.”

Subject: “Consciousness, Conscience, Soul, and Divine Guidance.”

Chris: “Teachers, a question was asked, “What is the difference between human consciousness and the soul? How does conscience and Thought Adjuster guidance differ?”
Teacher Ophelius: “Thank you for the questions. First let me say that the explanation of consciousness and the soul are subject to the primitive forms of human language and human intellect which limits or constrains the more concise meanings for which they may be understood by the morontial mind or spirit mind. We shall then proceed with this caveat in mind in 600 words or less.
“Consciousness is that part of you that is alive and self-aware which is a part of the One Consciousness — the mind of the Creator. When you are born into the material world, the Universe Mother Spirit endows you with the spark of life and ‘activates’ your consciousness. This is your operating system and it interfaces with your human brain which acts as a transceiver to process your experiences and all the expressions of thought and feelings in the material plane. Like a computer, your ‘operating system’ at birth is very basic and has little or no applications (third party software) which to use until it is programmed by the ‘testing’ of the environment (learning) which then allows the personality to take charge of the methods of learning using the compilation of wisdom — comparing and determining probable outcomes based on past decisions and actions. This is coincident with the building of the library of meanings and values that may be useful for the co-creative expression of the Indwelling Spirit — your life guide, divine partner, and spiritual coordinator. Free will allows the personality (via consciousness) to function by choice to act and or react to the conditions of the environment, build relationships; and whether or not to follow spirit leadings. Consciousness is so much more and cannot be adequately explained here in one paragraph.
“The soul is a collection of those meanings, values, and experiences that the Spirit ‘specifies’ as having survival value and that is in alignment with all things True, Beautiful, and Good. The Indwelling Spirit is preparing you for your morontial life in the hereafter — like packing a suitcase for a long journey, the Indwelling Spirit only packages those needful things in the soul that you may make use of in the long journey ahead. When you awaken in the resurrection halls of Mansonia, your consciousness shall then be reconnected to the vessel of the soul containing those surviving meanings, values, and experiences from your former life. You shall then continue your learning and co-creative expression in a new environment with much greater capacity for thinking, learning, and co-creative expression with the Indwelling Spirit — life continues — consciousness continues to operate, but with a new and expanded set of parameters.
“Conscience is a human form of reflective thought that compares the thoughts and or conduct of the personality with learned values conditioned by societal memes for which decisions about the value of the self in relationship to others is preconceived. This is sometimes called the ‘inner critic’ and is not related to the leadings or guidance of the Indwelling Spirit. Conscience has to do with human ethics and self-conduct associated with the conditions of planetary life — the Indwelling Spirit speaks and guides human consciousness to understand universal truth and eternal values when the conditions or situations of planetary life or inner thought become aligned with these truths and values which the Indwelling Spirit may use as a ‘teachable moment. Conscience and divine guidance may be perceived as being similar in the human mind, but they are not.
