“[Judas] must have believed in Jesus, but we doubt whether he really loved the Master with a whole heart.” [UB 139:12.5]

Thought Adjuster: “What prevented Judas from loving Jesus? “[He] was given to the indulgence of hate and suspicion. He was an expert at misinterpretation of the words and acts of his friends.” [UB 139:12.6]

“Love is incompatible with such traits of character. Hate and suspicion are deadly weapons that crush the fragile essence of love. To assume the worst-case scenario about others compromises one’s ability to love them.

“Judas was drawn to the generally attractive and exquisitely charming personality of the Master. However, the prejudices he entertained toward Galileans made it difficult for him to engage himself whole-heartedly in his discipleship. In the end, unable to face the severe consequence of his betrayal, he committed suicide.

“How can you prevent such a personal tragedy from befalling you? Instead of searching within to come to grip with his emotional handicaps, Judas blamed others for his uneasiness, as he suffered from narcissistic tendencies that made him a poor judge of his character. He believed in the teachings of Jesus but failed to apply the Golden Rule to his lifestyle, remaining stuck in an eye-for-an-eye type of comeback to what he mistook for personal offenses.

“The other apostles loved Jesus with their whole hearts and found comfort in mutual emotional support. Love generates more love, while isolation turns its’ switch to the off position.

“Believe in the power of love in action and animate your belief by devoting your life to its practice. Unlike Judas’ tragic life, yours will move toward its happy eternal unfolding, validating that you had wisely placed your chips on the winning side.”
