The Scribe: “I begin this lesson with a confession and for anyone having arrived at the Urantia Papers from a former fundamentalist religion such comment as this must be lip-smacking delicious. It is often noted that mankind is born in sin, but I say, ‘Not so fast!’ The Creator’s gift of personality is pure, is unspoiled and perfect. Anyone or anything hailing from the Father of All that Exists is perfect and is most likely to remain so, as long as he or she continues to dwell in pure spirit form. Thought Adjusters dwell in, and are, of pure spirit.
“The infinitely varied personalities allotted to His human children are essentially perfect, yes, perfect in essence, but by arriving in your most inequitable space/time they almost inevitably will become corrupted. In earth time and morontia lives they need to become both experienced and once more perfect, slowly, slowly on. Heaven indeed holds its breath waiting for its earthly children to do what is right and it rejoices when their decision making is according to the Father’s demand for them to once again ‘be perfect by choice in imperfect surroundings, yes, eventually as He is perfect.’
“I know your text tells you that no one may speak about Thought Adjusters in an informed way. After all, we are the Mystery Monitors and so very much about us is incomprehensable to you. It truly is. Suffice it to say that, firstly, your text predates the Correcting Time and in keeping with the rebellion’s adjudication new rules do apply and secondly, I am a Thought Adjuster, be it now a personalized one, and I may confer with you about TAs. I will live on in making myself useful in a progress-oriented drive and I will continue to lift the weight from Machiventa’s busy shoulders whenever I can.
“Every local universe has, or in time will have, at least one personalized Thought Adjuster by virtue of their each having companioned their Creator Son on His final bestowal as a creature born of woman on the world selected from the many of His making. So you see, serving the Sovereign has its rewards, yet be assured it is a tense time that tolerates not a single mistake.
“Indeed, my friend, the Supreme Adjuster — yes, always a Supreme Adjuster — deserving of companioning a Creator Son during His final bestowal must show an ancient, flawless past of multiple assists and rescues, an impeccable ‘present’ with the bestowal and a known and celebrated future in progress for his adopted world and the greater local universe, furthermore. By Those Who made the TA their choice for the Creator Son, all of his past, present and future is known. So be it. I shall flawlessly serve progress on your planet from this time on.

Subject: “Be You Perfect in Your Own Day and Time — Part 1.”

Teacher Ophelius: “Dear One, the question has been asked about what it means to answer the Universal Father’s edict to ‘Be perfect, as I AM perfect,’ and more specifically, what it means for you — those living on Urantia. Certainly perfection in and of itself is something that is not attainable on the evolutionary worlds of time, but there is a ‘standard’ that is set for those at each planetary level of evolutionary status, meaning: ‘Be you perfect in your own day and time.’ Because life on each evolutionary world develops uniquely and stands at various stages of development, with respect to Light and Life status, there are different standards set for each as an expected ‘curve’ of normal development and growth as it is viewed by your planetary administrators: the Planetary Prince, the System Sovereign and the Most Highs of Edentia.
“On very young planets where will creatures are still working out the vicissitudes of primitive life having had very little development in science or culture, the bar is set rather low with the expectation that they will follow the path of tribe against tribe warfare while developing tools and more cunning ways to kill each other. At this level of development, there are few, if any, Thought Adjusters (TAs) of fusion status indwelling these creature minds. At best, TAs may temporarily indwell these minds to gain experience with the biological mind mechanisms for that species as it may later (in time) be evolving to a fusion status creature.
“Once a Planetary Prince and his staff come to an evolutionary world, the bar is raised with respect to the guidance and education that is afforded the surrounding tribes of natives. They are taught many things from farming, building, raising cattle, sanitation, personal hygiene, to the basic cosmology of the universe and spiritual realities including the worship of the Universal Father. They are also given codes of conduct, which they are expected to adopt when participating in the educational activities in the centers of the Planetary Prince and his staff. It is here where men and women first develop their societies and primitive governments as they take what they have learned back to their peoples.
“Later, when an Adamic pair (Adam and Eve) come to a world, the bar is raised yet again as the biology of the natives are elevated with the infusion of the Violet bloodline from the Adamic progeny. Spiritual development from this point begins to ‘ramp up’ and these creatures then move from merely obeying the laws of conduct to knowing with greater surety the leadings of the Indwelling Spirit as more and more of them begin to receive TAs of possible fusion status.
“Once a Magisterial Son, or a Creator Son visits the planet, the bar is raised yet again and the TAs flock to these worlds in great numbers which have been prepared by the Spirit of Truth to indwell the minds of those creatures for fusion potential. From this point, the planet is on an upward curve of development in both science and spirituality.
“Everything I have just described (greatly abridged) to you is more or less the ‘normal’ curve of planetary evolution and expectation. However, your world, being classed as an experimental world and one that has been involved in a system wide rebellion for over 200,000 years, has had a ‘relapse’ in growth and spiritual development, and so it is that the standard set for those who live their lives on Urantia is ‘adjusted’ for their ‘day and time.’ In part 2 of this message we shall look more closely at what that standard is and how it relates to your current development.

Subject: “About Self-Respect.”

“Spiritual living mightily increases true self-respect. But self-respect is not self-admiration. Self-respect is always coordinated with the love and service of one’s fellows.” [Urantia Papers 1740:01].
Thought Adjuster: “Let us expand on Self-Respect. What do you respect yourself for? You can either feel ‘self-respectable’ or ‘self-despicable’ depending on whether or not you are conflicted within yourself. Inner conflict implies that there are areas within your being in dire need of harmonization. It means that you experience some inner discordance due to the fact that some of your actions clash with your professed intentions and go against the values of Truth, Beauty and Goodness. They may fool others but do not fool your own subtle inner truth detector.
“In your world, many so-called ‘respectable’ individuals do not actually meet the standards for the respect and admiration of their peers. They are admired based on their external status of wealth or power, or for a specific God-given talent. Yet, they climb or are placed by their peers on dangerously unstable man-made pedestals that can become an even greater factor of unbalance in their character. Narcissism — unhealthy self-admiration — is a soul poison. It fails to acknowledge that the self is unsustainable by itself and that its livelihood depends on the whole organism.
“Indeed, self-respect is proportional to your love and service toward your fellow men. Self-respect comes with the added bonus of inner peace. If you are what others consider a ‘straight arrow,’ you will eventually reach your intended target of being of higher service — the Divine Bull’s Eye.
“However, if you entertain hidden agendas of self-aggrandizement and self-service at the expense of others, you may shoot yourself in the foot and cause personal injury to the integrity of your being.
“Your planetary history has experienced both sides of the coin — self-centered dictators and God-centered individuals whose deeds spoke louder than their words. The nefarious effects of narcissism were exemplified by Lucifer, its infamous poster child, and were later counterbalanced by the selfless life of Jesus Christ who never compromised His integrity by falling victim to the dangers of adulation and who lived His entire life loving and serving His fellows.
“Dear ones, if you suffer from weak self-respect, it is not a terminal affliction. Go within and ponder what could be at the root of that symptom. Be honest with yourself as truth is a great liberator. There is so much within each one of you that is worthy of love and respect. Yet, love and respect have to be generously shared with others and they will automatically come back at you like a glorified boomerang in the form of self-love and self-respect.”

Thought Adjuster: “Nowadays people seem to need to connect to the internet just to survive. If they don’t have a phone or computer with internet, they feel really out of order — out of everything. What they do not realize is that they are missing the most important connection: the connection with God.
“This connection can give them more information than any Internet search engine. This connection can give them more peace and joy than Facebook. But it’s necessary that people seek to stay connected. The wonder is that wherever you are, you can ‘find a signal’. It’s enough to want to do it, to find a few moments of silence, and God will always be there to answer you.
“If today you are uncertain about any situation, if you feel sad, if the load is too much, seek where all the answers are, seek where you will find peace and comfort, seek where you will find love and understanding, seek where there is infinite wisdom: seek God.
“He is available to you at all times, because He lives in you. Just close your eyes, quiet your mind, be aware. He is there.”

Thought Adjuster: “In the beginning, you start your journey of faith based on the truths you hear from others. However, even then there is something within you that responds and somehow confirms that those words you heard contain a hint of truth. That which is true and relevant for your life is always confirmed by the Spirit of Truth and preserved by your Thought Adjuster as a bona-fide spiritual experience.
“With time, curiosity that inspires you to know more awakens in you — a hunger for truth. You continue searching and you find more answers to your questions. Soon you start to notice a pattern, an invisible hand that guides your efforts, leading you to where you need to go in order to learn new and valuable lessons.
“Later a true desire for perfection arises in you and you will have the chance to decide that the best you can do with your life and that the most beneficial course of action for yourself is to attempt to know the will of the Father and express this will through your actions. This impulse to be better every day will transform you into a creature less material and more in sync with the next level of existence — the Morontia level.
“This will be a natural process — maybe you may see it as a slow process from your impatient human point of view — but the speed in which these stages are reached is not important, because in eternity time is truly irrelevant. Soon you will observe that this desire to be more like God becomes ever-present in your life and the need to be in communion with your Father — adoration — inspires you continuously to search for His voice in stillness. You will also notice how unconditional love starts to manifest through you to your siblings in this world, which is the definitive evidence of the fact that you will have found God.
“This is how a human being comes progressively closer to God and moves toward perfection. There are no shortcuts or important variations in this method. This is the way of true experience. The initial approach may be promoted in different ways and while some may follow the whispers of their Thought Adjusters others may need to be shaken in order to awaken.
“You can’t try to love others without really knowing unconditional love and you can’t pretend to be perfect without having the inspiration of becoming like your Father. This would be like going to a new city to visit a friend without knowing where that person lives. Spiritual awakening is a slow and progressive road, but those who venture onto this road will find success if they have the courage to follow the guidance of the divine presence within them.”
